Steak. My all time fave. You seriously cant beat a good cut of meat cooked just how you like it. That said I met my pal Kiran a few weeks back for some midweek celebrations at the newly opened Marco Pierre White in Angel.
MPW is quite the renowned chef so I was keen to see if the food matched the hype. I don’t really rate gimmicky chains like Jamie’s Italian, so I’m hoping he can pull it off.
MPW steakhouse & grill is hidden inside the Double Tree Hotel. Very cool bar area which I didn’t know existed. The restaurant was fairly quiet, lush decor, crisp white tablecloths and super friendly servers.
How else to start celebrations, or just a general Thursday, than prosecco. Lovely fancy flutes to toast us being grown ups and having flats in London. Kiran’s offer had just been excepted- a big deal and very exciting. Cheers.
The waiter brought over a mini pot of fresh olives to snack on while we looked through the menu.
Kiran went for this amazing tower of prawn cocktail goodness. Nice and traditional with medium sized prawns (I’ve seen plumper to be fair) and tons of salad and sauce.
I went for something a little more unusual, the duck rillettes. It had a layer of fat to protect the inside and keep it nice and fresh. I didn’t really know this and luckily Kiran stopped me just in time before I ate a fork full of lard. Yum.
It was so so good. Chunky tasty duck meat with small pieces of sweet prunes were gorge. Loved the sourdough too.
Now for the main event. So many steaks to choose from but as we both love our meat there seemed only one choice- go hard with a chateaubriand to share.
It looked really impressive on a wooden board, pre sliced with onion rings and tomato. sadly it was a little over cooked. We asked for medium rare, and this was def medium, no many pink bits which I really enjoy. Saying that we still got stuck in. The meat was lovely, really tasty and juicy and the portion was huge.
It was great to see that chips came with the steak as usually places like to charge you more per side. The hand cut triple cooked chips were insane, probably some of the nicest I’ve had, and that’s saying something.
We needed some token green so we didn’t feel too unhealthy so got some steamed spinach. Cute presentation in little tin saucepans.
And obvs a sauce. I cant get enough of béarnaise with my steak. Thick and creamy, yummmo.

Then desserts. The sticky, sticky, sticky toffee pudding was a little bit of a let down. If you saw my sticky toffee at Hawksmoor you’ll see the difference. It was perfectly good, just not as syrupy as they had lead us to believe.
The cheesecake on the other hand was delish. Tangy passion fruit sauce and creamy centre went down a treat.
We were then handed the extensive cocktail menu from bar60, it had our standard nightcap cocktail which we couldn’t turn down. Two perfectly shaken Expresso Martinis.
We were stuffed. Look at our happy little faces.
Overall we had a really decent dinner at MPW. As I expected there were a few niggles but the quality of the food was pretty good and the service was fab. I will defo be back in the bar for cocktails, but I think there’s better steaks to be had elsewhere with better value.
